Most of the files are self-explanatory, save for STE006--this one contains a lot of unedited audio, most of which is uneven. The file itself is monstrous and should only be handled by the most intrepid, preferrably with modern equipment. At some point I'll try to hack it into more digestable bits, and maybe even fix the audio levels, but for now, please enjoy what we currently have.

Video will be uploaded separately. YouTube quality is too abysmal for me to bother with; maybe if I had Windows and could upload 1 Gb FLV files instead of 100 Mb MPEGs, it'd be up to snuff. Revver is a bit better, but not perfect. I'll be uploading the files here instead. Watch for them!

You could call it a no-show devival.

EXCEPT FOR EVERYONE ELSE WHO DID.

At last count, tossing out a couple of no-shows on the will-call list, we had 166 paying devival-goers, not quite exceeding the 1998 record of 185 but damned nice to see. DAMNED NICE--when I had a chance to see it.

I'm quoting from an explanation I sent to one of the dozen or so people I saw that night for the first time in years:

I'm really sorry I did not get much of a chance to talk, but considering that, when I was not ranting, I was typically trying to find someone, putting out a fire, making sure we remained on schedule, revising the schedule, insuring we're following everyone's requirements, switching out volunteers in order to ensure everyone had some fun, answering questions and receiving praise from the drunk, and running into old friends and acquaintances and saying, "Oh hi! I'm really glad you could make it! Wonderful to see you again! Get in touch with me! But please excuse me, I gotta go...."

...Well, you can see I didn't have time to chat longer.

"I was busy explaining to someone who was already well devived that all the dots he kept asking about were part of a picture of J.R. "Bob" Dobbs, and that he was the founder of our religion--and then would have to re-explain the dots again."

You could kinda tell which of the devival-goers were first-timers and had no idea what they were getting into.

I hope they got into it GOOD. Judging from some of my admittedly hazy memories, it sure seemed like it. Pisces was right to complain about the bathrooms being used as honeymoon suites by those hitched up for 24 hours, but hey, there were X-Day Drills where there seemed to be fewer people AND less obvious bonobo frenzies, shocking as that may seem.

Speaking of hazy memories: Yes, it is true, for all the hawtness that was being smeared around the place, if there was a Ms. Connie contest, the winner would've been my dear, sweet friend, Rev. ElectriKali, the Bifocal Babe, who you might've seen at X-Day previously. In her square-dancing gingham and cowboy boots, hair in that curly poufy ball that reminds me so of back home, and impeccable makeup, she was the clearest and most devastating manifestation of Connie that evening. I'm surprised I have knuckles left, from all that chewing!

And while I did not personally see it firsthand, there's photographic evidence to back the stories I've heard. Despite having told many, many people to bring watches for the wristwatch smashing, not one soul dared to offer up a wristwatch! I was shocked and horrified, until I was told that some brave soul had something even better to offer up--an iPod, which Dr. Hal promptly smashed with a hammer, parts scattered all over the dance floor, while the audience squealed and shouted with rapture. While it means the point of Time Control was not driven home (although Scalpod covered it ably in his own rant, I understand) I must say that it was quite classy.

I was pleasantly surprised that the debut sermon by Elder Episkopos Caterer Marcus Evenstar went over so well! I mean, I know I like it when he gets on a tear, but to hear a paying audience shouting hosanna and splitting butts over it was a revelation. Trust me, he shall return. While he, the eldest of the clench elders, was making his ranting debut, so was our youngest, Rev. Andre Brothel, who was in that group of young SubGeniuses who were too young for the liquor board the first time around. (He helped out on the third one, if I recall correctly.) But I must say, judging from the reactions he elicited--bolstered by a heavy use of German and free beer, admittedly--the boy has promise as one of Dobbs' own troublemakers and heartbreakers, and it was great to have him as a devival partner.

Dr. Hal, I so wish I had the time to properly savor your ranting. Yours too, Pisces, even though we had discussed what you were going to say. I told you that you'd get "that call", though. I'm sure that the returned, unreleased "documentation" helps soothe that pain, though.

It was impossible to miss SpinalCracker, however. For a young bunch of punks with a SubGenius bass player, they're pretty fun onstage! And LOUD, too. And while Scalpod and NormalJean, singing and playing acoustic guitar and melodium, might not have been loud, their SubGenius drinking songs came at just the right time of the evening for jiggin' and reelin' and OOBIN' and GREENGIN'.

And, it was impossible NOT to miss Hemorrhoy Rogers, who seems to be in the tradition of Janor Hypercletes or Lonesome Cowboy Dave, possessing the spirit of transcendent haplessness. I honestly suspect that he's still knocking on doors in Seattle, asking if the devival's started yet, and turning away puzzled at the puzzlement he himself engendered. Ah, but perhaps with the right chauffer/minder, one day he'll redeem himself and leave us all slap-frap-happy.

The Bucket of Pils was dispensed, in great big fistfuls, while the audience greedily attempted to commune with the Void between "Bob"'s own ears. For those who ever got to feed carp at a carp pond, you know exactly how I felt, and it felt GOOD. Andre and I then tag-teamed our way through a Short Duration Marriage of epic proportions, followed by my ShorDurMar'ing Andre to his girlfriend for the evening, and then followed by a SHORT DURATION DIVORCE of Scalpod and NormalJean, for five minutes, executed with a chop of Andre's kung-fu grip!

And so when Hemorrhoy Rogers did not magically appear, I cleared the stage so that the DJs--ours and ChickenHed's alike--could spin and everyone could dance and grope and what-all, but not before a bit of advice I wish to share with you all in closing:

NEVER get into a staring contest with a Dobbshead. Not only will you lose, you'll swear for years that it WINKED BACK.

Weather Schmeather, Devival is ON

For those of you who freaked out over the weather, unless you live in Snohomish County, you should rest easy knowing that the forecast for tomorrow will be far more typical for this time of year--cold and rainy.

I must admit, however, that seeing drizzle, then sleet, then drizzle again, then sunshine--then drizzle, sleet, drizzle, and sunshine AGAIN--followed by four hours' snowfall, including thunder and lightning at one point--somehow sages well for the weirdness we'll create tomorrow.

Please spread this around as much as possible. Apparently there is some road construction on Elliot Avenue. Up until about a week ago there was no parking on the street. Aiyo! However, that has changed and there is now parking allowed on the West Side of the street and maybe on the East side. Hendrick gave me the following info about parking b/c there are some additional options to street parking. Let's try to get the word out...

Where not to park (unless you'd like your vehicle to go away…):

The parking lot right next to us (South side)

Where you can park for sure:

The wine outlet parking lot to the north of us – after 8pm only. All vehicles need to be out of there by 6am.
We can legally park on the west side of Elliott Ave W (the parking restrictions for nighttime ended on 4/12, and new restrictions only apply during the daytime.)
There is a small lot on the corner of Mercer and Elliott that belongs to the city and is free to use.
There is parking behind Blackstock lumber (the next light to the North of us on West side of Elliott Ave W)

Where you can possibly park (not sure):

I'm not sure whether parking would be enforced on the east side of Elliott Ave W if they're not working on resurfacing. That's a judgment call everyone should make for themselves.
There are several business parking lots that should be ok, but we don't have any agreement with them, so I can't guarantee that

Baskin Robbins lot (just S of Mercer intersection on Elliott). They close at 10, so parking there after 10:30
Super Supplements to north of us on East side of Elliott. They close at 9, so parking after 9:30
Taco Time and Starbucks parking lots to north of us on east side of Elliott. They close at 11pm, so parking there after 11:30

If you would like to help promote this devival, please feel free to print this out, photocopy it, cut them into quarters (cheap at Kinko's if you go crazy) and place in any and every odd crevice where they'll let you.

When distributing these, feel free to be creative, weird, sarcastic, etc., but DO NOT ACT LIKE A JERK. Repeat--DO NOT ACT LIKE A JERK. The person from whom you're asking permission to drop off a few fliers might well be a latent unsaved SubGenius, whose conversion results in a series of freak incidences that end with him or her curing cancer or coming up with some really good jokes at least.

Be prepared to answer questions--not about the devival, about "Bob" and the Church. Remember, if anyone seems dubious, there's probably someone within earshot who'd react strongly--and usually positively--to the mention of "Bob" or his visage, and that often convinces the person behind the desk or counter to let you put a stack somewhere in the place. I am not fooling--at least one person who helped me poster before has seen it happen first hand and can testify.

Devival Hotel Information

For those who are coming to the Devival from out of town:

The cheapest hotels are around SeaTac, thanks to heavy competition for travelers, and start around $59 a night. While there is bus service from SeaTac to the devival site, it's a bit far, so this might be the most economical solution for those who plan on renting a car.

The cheapest hotels within a short walk of the venue are:

Seattle Pacific Hotel
Inn at Queen Anne

Both are, as of this post, offering rooms under $90, not necessarily counting taxes and what-not.

The venue is very close to Downtown Seattle, so if you don't mind paying for more amenities, you have quite a few options.

For the most adventurous and broke among us, the Green Tortoise Hostel offers dorm-style rooms as low as $25 per night.

Bus service in Downtown Seattle tends to be fairly good. Both Routes 24 and 33 go from Downtown to Elliot on Saturdays. The last 24 should be shortly after the devival part is over, after midnight, but for those of you brave enough to stay up all night with ChickenHed, you can catch the first bus back to Downtown around 5:45 AM.

A ride board will be forthcoming if I am asked to create one. For now, slack.

Dr. Hal Shall Be There!*

Dr. Hal has confirmed that, * short of any travel complications impacting his own show, he will be at The Tenth Anniversary Final SubGenius Devival in Seattle this April.

If you are not familiar with Dr. Hal, AKA Dr. Howl, Dr. Howland Owll, and just plain Harry S. Robins, you just aren't paying any attention. He's one of those few men who prefer the gentleman bohemian lifestyle over making a vast fortune by selling out on just one of his immense talents. He seems utterly out of place in this century, and yet it's clear that he's far more ready for the 21st Century than most bipeds.

His stage show, Ask Dr. Hal, is beloved among San Franscisco intellegencia and hipsters for his encyclopedic grasp of almost any subject of which they might ask, and for a mere dollar apiece, they do. His presence on the 25-year-old KPFA SubGenius radio show hosted by Puzzling Evidence always adds just the right amount of weird gravitas to the antics of the other co-hosts, making him beloved of both San Francisco mutants that stay up or get up ridiculously early, and of ALL other SubGenius radio shows. That old-fashioned, mild, articulate voice of his has been occasionally lucrative, whether it's as a co-host on a cable conspiracy-theory show, as a scientist type in video games, or as added color to a documentary on the War On Drugs.

But the voice is but one aspect of the Artist, for he is one of the SubGenius greats in the world of cartooning and illustration. His most recent book, Dinosaur Alphabet, reveals his distinctively staggering level of detail balanced by a hearty use of thick, precise lines. Every SubGenius book of scripture bears his art, and so does that collection of Weirdo comics you were looking at that one time. But of course, he won't be illustrating for us, no.

He shall be preaching the very Wor of "Bob". WITH THAT VOICE.

The Show Must Go On... And On... And Onnnnnnnnnnnnnnn...!

For some of you, this is old news you've already heard; for others, this is the first you might've heard about it. Apologies to those who wish you were in the former group--it's been crazy.

A week and a day after Thanksgiving, our house was burgled, and all the good computers, among other things, were taken. This includes the computer I was using to work on the devival. The good news there is that pretty much everything of immediate importance to the devival is either online, in other hands, or written in a notebook I keep with me. The bad news is that my technological contributions to the devival will be on the backburner until I have some sort of adequate replacement.

Then it gets worse. Thanks to the flood rains of this week, our damaged roof took on more water, resulting in the living room ceiling bowing and cracking Thursday night. We left for somewhere safer, and when we returned with our handyman friend to check it out, we found a hole in the ceiling and several dozen pounds of soggy debris in the middle of the living room.

WE ARE LEAVING THIS HOUSE.

My family has already left to stay with friends in Columbus while I--with much appreciated help--will be packing, recycling, selling, giving, and throwing away everything we still have left. As a result, my involvement with the devival must be on a much more hands-off level than before.

I still remain involved, however, albeit I will be coordinating much more than contributing for the time being. I know that ChickenHed is currently looking for a venue, that Andre is ready and able to print as needed, that our financiers are ready to pay for needful expenses. Not even this double-fistful of EeHeeg EeHeen's starsodomy can stop this devival. Let me make this clear:

NOT EVEN.

THIS DEVIVAL IS WILLING ITSELF TO HAPPEN AND IS DETERMINED TO HAPPEN. DO NOT TRY TO STOP IT. YOUR SAFETY AND SANITY LIES IN DOING YOUR BEST TO HELP IT HAPPEN.

I will be emailing individuals as needed to wrap up current items or to provide updates. If any of you have questions, please let me know.

Post-Meeting News

After returning from that meeting, I feel more convinced than ever that this devival will just happen no matter what else I may do to help or hinder it.

First, we are now officially partnering with Chickenhed to put on this devival, meaning that we will not want for equipment or for random weirdness at apropos moments.

Second, we have someone who's both well-connected with venues and has some great ideas of his own, in the person of Rev. Andre Brothel. Truly, he is a Superior Mutant, and with the fire of wanting to be a world-class Devivor, He has promise, I tell you.

Third, there is still no solid date or venue, but we are currently aiming for a date around April 3-6, and we have a lot of excellent leads now. Expect an announcement before too long.

T-Minus Five Months And Slacking

Truly, it is the Time of PeE, and most of us interested in organizing a devival are busy clearing our calendars and settling affairs before we take on the sacred Instanity of joining the community of Devivors. Even so, there are bits of news to share:

First, our holy Clench Artist, St. Kenneth Humanoid, is working on the art for the new poster. He created a mockup of the poster that's extremely rough--cobbled together from an earlier mockup I threw together and a bit out-of-date, and utterly lacking this blog's address or any other contact info!--and yet hints well at the end result. It will undoubtedly look even cooler later on. How could it not?

St. Ken, who sometimes is called "Huey" by his pals, is responsible for a metric gigaton of Churchly art, even though his work is largely privately owned by obsessive collectors. He has been both directly and indirectly responsible for much of the art used by SSUCC and its devivals. (The first poster, which I will eventually rescan as the digital art is long disappeared, had only his amazing Color Dobbshead; he created the amazing devival art for the 1999 and 2000 devivals, with my performing layout duties. This time he will be doing all the layout, to give it a more comic-book feel, and I can't wait to see what happens after he's done tweaking and twonking it.

In other news, we will be announcing an organizational meeting soon, and stay tuned for blog tweaks and twonks on our part.

Feel like dancing for slack? Don't fret, you will be. For we have, not one, but two DJs that will be spinning and counter-spinning, and perhaps even live-mixing under the ranting! DJ Sloth and DJ JessBone will be providing a near-endless rug of sublime grinding and throbbing tunes sure to make you shake your bootie until The Conspiracy falls out of it. Now those of you SubGeniuses who normally can't be reached by words or art will have no excuse not to writhe in true Superior Mutant ecstasy.

We have confirmed that both Rev. Ivan Stang and Pope Sternodox Keckhaver will be coming to the 10th Anniversary Final SubGenius Devival! As veterans of the First Ever Final SubGenius Devival, their presence is absolutely necessary to help ensure a long, productive finality.

ALSO: We might have a DJ! Details to be worked out later....

Incidentally, if anyone knows the band Blöodhäg, please let me know. I'd love to invite them to the devival.
